He’s so quiet and still.

The heart monitor is beeping. That’s good.

I’ll stay with him. I don’t want him to wake up alone. Nobody should ever wake up all alone and hurt.

He has the thickest scull in the world. How can he be in a coma?

‘Wake up Giles. Please?’

‘I bought you a birthday present. It’s really nice. You’ll like it. I’ll give it to you now if you wake up.’

The beeping is slowing. Bad. That’s bad.

‘Giles. Giles! You have to wake up now.’

I slap him. I pound on his chest. ‘Wake up! Please!’

It’s slower. The beeps are so far between.

‘Please don’t leave me Giles.’

No more beeps. Ho God, there’s no more beeps.

He’ll never wake up.
